Cayenne pepper was spread around the world by Portuguese traders in the 15th and 16th centuries. Originally from French Guiana, it was called Kian by the Tupi Indians. The name is derived from the Cayenne River or the coastal capital, Cayenne. The Cayenne pepper was first mentioned by an author who was a passenger on Christopher Columbus' ship from Chile to Portugal. The man talked about how Native Americans ate “hot” fruits like apples.
Cayenne Pepper is long and thin with a sharp tip, however there are numerous varieties ranging in size from 20 cm long by 2 cm wide and up to a miniature size of 1.25 cm long by 3 mm wide .
